Hello and welcome – my name is Danielle, founder and counsellor/psychotherapist here at Renewed Horizons Counselling & Psychotherapy!

I’ve always wanted to start a blog, and it felt natural to create one centred around something I’m deeply passionate about: mental health. Here, I’ll be sharing thoughts on a range of topics, including the importance of self-care, different aspects of mental health, and insights into the therapy process and how it can support you.

I’d like this first post to serve as a brief introduction to who I am and my journey to establishing my practice.

I recently relocated to Dorset in the United Kingdom from the United States – something I never imagined I would do! Moving countries is a significant life transition and, at times, can feel both exciting and challenging. Experiences like this can bring uncertainty, but they can also open the door to growth and new perspectives.

I completed my studies in the US, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Following this, I relocated to the UK and began building my professional life here.

My decision to become a counsellor came from a longstanding interest in mental health, a desire to help reduce stigma, and a curiosity about how people think, feel, and experience the world. Over time, I recognised that my natural ability to listen, alongside my empathy and calm approach, made this path a strong fit for me.

Starting my own private practice was not something I had originally planned. However, differences in the counselling field (even the spelling of counselling!) between the US and UK led me to create something of my own. Renewed Horizons was built with intention – from a calming green aesthetic with a subtle coastal influence, reflecting my new home, to the values and boundaries that guide my work. The name itself reflects the belief that change is possible, and that individuals can develop new perspectives (or horizons), build healthier coping strategies, and move towards a more fulfilling way of living.

In my work, I take an integrative approach, drawing from modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. This allows me to tailor sessions to your individual needs and goals.

I work with individuals 14+ who may be experiencing challenges such as anxiety, depression or low mood, self-esteem and confidence difficulties, life transitions, relationship difficulties, grief, stress, emotional regulation, LGBTQIA+ related experiences, and more.

I currently offer online sessions across the UK, with the hope of expanding to in-person sessions in the future. I place strong emphasis on creating a safe, structured, confidential, and supportive space. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and empowering, and I aim to meet you where you are. I believe that meaningful progress happens best within a trusting and respectful therapeutic relationship, and I work to build this through consistency, empathy, and authenticity. I am also committed to providing an inclusive, affirming, and culturally responsive space for individuals of all backgrounds, identities, and life experiences.

Outside of work, I value the importance of self-care and maintaining balance. I enjoy spending time outdoors, going for walks, visiting the beach, spending time with family, reading, and attending concerts. I’m also a big cat lover!

Therapy is often thought of as a space to focus on difficulties, but it is equally a space to recognise strengths, celebrate progress, and explore what brings meaning and enjoyment to your life. You don’t need to be in crisis to seek support – therapy can be a proactive step towards understanding yourself and improving your overall wellbeing.

Thank you for taking the time to read this introduction.

If anything here resonates with you, you are very welcome to get in touch. I offer a free 20-minute consultation where you can ask questions and see whether my approach feels right for you.
